STARS WITH TWO PACIFIC DIVISION GAMES THIS WEEKEND

by Pete Richmire

TACOMA, WA. – The Pacific Division of the Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) has quietly turned into a three-team race this season and the Stars will face the other two teams this weekend. First up is a home match with the division leading San Diego Sockers (8-1) on Friday night.

This game will feature the MASL leading scorer in Tacoma’s Nick Perera and the league’s leading goal keeper. Boris Pardo leads the league in goals-against-average (3.39), save percentage (.773), and wins (8). Perera also tops the MASL in assists with 16.

The Stars offensive attack is also bolstered by Philip Lund with 14 points (10G-4A) and Michael Ramos’ 13 (5G-8A). Danny Waltman anchors the defense in goal for Tacoma. His five wins ranks him in the league’s top five in victories and Troy Peterson is second in blocked shots with 13.

San Diego enters the game on a six-game win streak. Their only loss this season came on Tacoma’s visit to Pachenga Arena San Diego on December 22. Offensively, it is Kraig Chiles and his 19 points (13G-6A) and Brandon Escoto’s 17 (9G-8A) which top the Sockers roster. The story for San Diego is the stellar goal-keeping of Pardo. Five of San Diego’s games this season have been one-goal decisions and Pardo has prevailed in four of those.

On Sunday it is a trip to Citizens Business Bank Arena for the Stars, their second time this season. The first ended in a 6-3 win for the Stars on December 23. Tacoma holds a 2-1 season series lead after last Saturday’s 8-5 victory at the accesso ShoWare Center.

The Fury, another team with an incredible goal-keeper in Chris Toth, also has plenty of offensive fire power. Adrien Perez, 20 points (17G-3A), leads the league in goals scored and is third in points scored. Juan Carlos Gonzalez is the team’s second leading scorer with 17 points (11G-6A).

For Toth, his 3.39 GAA, .746 save percentage, and six wins are all good for third best in the MASL this season.
