STARS START HOT BUT FADE IN LOSS TO MONTERREY 6-4
MONTERREY, MEXICO – The Tacoma Stars (11-12) jumped out to a nice lead Sunday but Monterrey (18-4) was able to turn the tables and snag a come from behind win 6-4. In a game marred by technical difficulties at Arena Monterrey, MASL leading scorer Nick Perera notched a hat-trick and Stars keeper Danny Waltman had two assists in the loss.
The first quarter did not resemble the game’s final outcome even remotely as Perera netted a natural hat-trick, one of the tougher feats in sports. The first of his three unanswered goals came with 11:27 left in the first quarter on an assist from Waltman. Perera knocked in an unassisted goal with 7:55 to go before Waltman found him for his third goal to close out scoring in the opening frame. Tacoma out-shot the Flash 6-5 in the first 15 minutes and that stat would change dramatically. Monterrey held a 30-9 favor in shots the rest of the way.
The only goal of the second quarter was Monterrey’s first of the game and it came unassisted from Enrique Canez to make it a 3-1 game in favor of Tacoma at halftime.
The Flash turned the game their way with three straight goals in the third quarter beginning with Edgar Gonzalez without the aid of an assist with 7:42 to go. Miguel Vaca found Marco Antonio Tovar with 4:38 remaining in the quarter to tie the game 3-3. Gonzalez banged home his second of the game, this time with an assist from Edgar Flores for the 4-3 Monterrey lead heading into the final quarter.
Monterrey added the first two goals of the fourth quarter to give them six unanswered goals in the game. The first in the quarter was from Carlos Farias followed by Franck Tayou. Both of their goals were assisted by Flores and the Flash were up 6-3 with 9:04 left in the game. The final goal of the match came courtesy of a Perera assist to Philip Lund to reach the 6-4 final score.
With the win, Monterrey sweeps the season series with the Stars 2-0.
