STARS OPEN 2019-20 REGULAR SEASON NOVEMBER 30TH

by Cory Howerton

Kent, WA – The Tacoma Stars open their fifth season in the MASL with a Saturday night match up with long time rival San Diego Sockers. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:05pm at the accesso ShoWare Center for the Stars' Magnetic Schedule Night.

In the first of twelve home matches, the Stars and the Sockers pick up where they left off in 2019 as these two West Coast teams continued the long tradition of facing each other in the playoffs. The Sockers edged the Stars 2-0, including a series clinching overtime win in America’s finest city.  The Sockers come into the match having not lost a game away from home in 2018-19 (12-0).  Tacoma handed the Sockers their only regular season loss of the season on December 23rd, a 5-4 win at Pachenga Arena San Diego.

Tacoma comes into 2019-20 returning several key players from last years MASL playoff squad that finished second in the Pacific Division and made their second consecutive playoff appearance.

Returning is reigning league MVP Nick Perera, who led the MASL with 80 points on 39 goals and 41 assists to pace the Tacoma offense.

Former Sounder Lamar Neagle returns for his first full season in Tacoma, after appearing in six games, and accumulating five points on a goal and four assists.

Another former Sounder roaming the midfield for Tacoma, Philip Lund returns to the Stars, having played in 41 regular season matches and collecting 32 goals and 10 assists on 103 shots on goal in his first two seasons in the orange and blue.

Backstopping the Tacoma defense is veteran goalkeeper and Gig Harbor native Danny Waltman, who appeared in 15 fixtures for the Stars last season, finishing with 7 wins and a 5.68 goals against average.

The Stars will host all but one of their division foes at home in a season that will see San Diego, Mesquite, California, Senora, Monterrey, and Ontario all visit the accesso ShoWare Center. In addition, the Florida Tropics and Harrisburg Heat will visit the Pacific Northwest for the first time in club history.  Dallas is the lone division opponent that will not visit Kent during the regular season.

Following the opener, Tacoma hits the road for their first road test of the season, taking on the newly branded California Express on Friday, December 6th.  The Stars return home for their only other home match before the New Year on December 15th when Jermaine Jones and the Ontario Fury invade the accesso ShoWare Center for a 5:05pm first kick.
