STARS HOST DALLAS FOR HOME FINALE FRIDAY

by Pete Richmire

KENT, WA. – The Tacoma Stars (10-9-1) will conclude their 2022-23 home schedule on Friday night with the front end of a home-and-home weekend series with the Dallas Sidekicks (0-17-3). The game will mark the return to the Northwest for Román Torres, a member of the Sidekicks, who remains a fan favorite of the Seattle Sounders FC faithful. Torres famously converted on a PK in a shootout that clinched the MLS Cup over Toronto FC in 2016.

For Tacoma, this weekend may be key in their hunt for a 2023 Ron Newman Cup playoff as the team visits the Empire Strykers and San Diego Sockers the following week. The team knows that the Sidekicks’ winless record does not mean this weekend can be taken lightly.

Stars fans may remember when Tacoma visited Texas on March 3 and trailed the Sidekicks by as many as four goals in the second half. Jamael Cox tied the game with 37 seconds left in regulation and then netted the game-winner just over a minute into overtime for the Stars to escape with the win.

The final regular-season home game brings Fan Appreciation Night and fans who may also be in for a treat on the field who wears number 10. Nick Perera the current league leader in points, assists, and points-per-game average, sits within striking distance of two very big career milestones.

With his very next assist, Perera will become only the second player in MASL history with 200 career regular season assists. The other exclusive club on the doorstep for Perera is just three points away which will give him 400 career regular-season points joining only Leo Gibson, Franck Tayou, and Ian Bennett with that achievement.

The playoff positioning likely will not be settled until the final weekend of the season and fans can follow the Stars progress at www.tacomastars.com.
