STARS EXTEND CONTRACT OF FORWARD NICK PERERA

by Pete Richmire

TACOMA, WA. – The Tacoma Stars have announced the extension of the contract of forward and leading scorer Nick Perera. Per team and league policies, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Perera joined the Stars during the 2017-18 season from the Syracuse Silver Knights and has led Tacoma in scoring every season since. He finished the 2018-19 campaign with 80 points (39G-41A) which ended with him being named the league’s MVP for the season.

Perera was the team captain for the Western Conference All-Stars in 2020 at Cable Dahmer Arena and he selected the squad which defeated the Eastern Conference by a 9-4 final. He played a pivotal role in putting the All-Star Game together and leading a Stars team which played every 2021 season game on the road with the accesso ShoWare Center unavailable due to COVID-19 regulations.

Perera’s talents are not limited to the indoor game. He is also the captain of the United States National Beach Soccer team which recently competed in the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup in Russia this summer, playing against Russia and Japan. Perera sits tied for second on the team in World Cup goals scored with seven.

Also, during the MASL off-season Perera was named Executive Director of Washington Youth Soccer, an organization which is in the Top 10 in the United States for its size and membership. In addition to his new connection guiding the future of soccer in Washington, he is looking forward to the MASL season with the Stars.

“I can’t wait to get back out there with the group in front of our fans. There’s something really special about this team and this organization and I’m proud to be able to represent the Stars for another season” Perera said.

Stars owner Lane Smith took the opportunity to acknowledge Perera’s roles with the Washington Youth Soccer organization and what he brings to the Tacoma organization and fans by saying “Nick is an outstanding player with an incredible knowledge of the game.  (I am) Looking forward to another great performance this season. Nick and his family now call the Northwest home and I am proud of his accomplishments both on and off the field with his new leadership role at Washington Youth Soccer.”

Perera and his family recently made the move from Southern California to Washington State to allow him to perform his duties with Washington Youth Soccer and the Tacoma Stars.
