STARS DROP SECOND STRAIGHT TO SOCKERS
TACOMA, WA. – The Tacoma Stars (0-2-0) hosted the San Diego Sockers (2-0-0) on Opening Night at the accesso ShoWare Center and for the second time this season battled in a close game until late in the match. The Stars took a one-goal lead in the fourth quarter before ultimately falling to the Sockers by a 9-6 final. Tacoma gave up five goals in the final frame while drawing three blue cards in under two minutes.
It was Teddy Bear Toss Night for Tacoma and fans didn’t have to wait long to relieve themselves of their stuffed animals. 31 seconds into the game Román Torres converted on a Nick Perera goal to begin the rain of plush prizes for Toys-for-Tots.
The second Stars goal came less than a minute later off the foot of Matt Braem to make it 2-0 very early in the proceedings. That was the high-point for the Stars though they did hold two-goal leads at 3-1 in the first quarter and 4-2 early in the second.
After the teams combined for five goals in the first frame, they each scored once in the second and Tacoma took a 4-3 lead to the locker room.
Goals by Perera for Tacoma and Brandon Escoto for San Diego kept Tacoma’s lead at one, now 5-4 heading to the eventful fourth quarter.
Four straight markers took the wind out of the game, but not the fans as Tacoma was on the receiving end of three blue cards, a shootout, and a penalty kick and found themselves down 8-5 with 7:24 to play in the game.
Alex Caceres snapped the goal run for Tacoma but the Sockers added another goal to finish with the 9-6 final.
