STARS AND SOCKERS SET FOR HOME AND HOME SERIES

by Pete Richmire

TACOMA, WA.- The Tacoma Stars (6-6) visit the Pachenga Arena San Diego Friday for the final time in the 2018-19 regular season to face the San Diego Sockers (12-1). Friday is scheduled to be the highly anticipated Major Arena Soccer League debut of U.S. soccer star Landon Donovan. The Stars first visit to Southern California resulted in the Sockers’ only loss of the season thus far, a 5-4 decision on December 16. This is the front end of a home-and-home series with the second game coming Sunday at the accesso ShoWare Center at 5:05 pm.

San Diego has a comfortable lead over the second place Stars at the midway point of the season with a five and a half game cushion. The Sockers’ offense is fourth in the league in goals scored with 89 but with the goal keeping of Boris Pardo, their +47 goal differential is the league’s top mark. Brandon Escoto leads San Diego in scoring with 29 points (17G-12A). His 17 goals and 12 assists are also team-high numbers. Kraig Chiles also has 17 goals for the Sockers.

For the Stars, Nick Perera continues to be among the league leaders in scoring, currently second with 37 points (15G-22A). Philip Lund and Mike Ramos sit second on the team in offense with 15 points each. A key to this series may also be in special teams play. Tacoma leads the MASL with its 64.3% success rate while on the power play. This is in contrast to the Sockers’ 25% with the man-advantage.

With San Diego’s addition of Donovan and the Stars’ acquisitions of Sanaldo, Pablo Da Silva, and Jonathan Greenfield, these two teams can have different looks than the first two meetings of the season. The teams will play for the final time of the regular season on March 31 at the accesso ShoWare Center.
