Galaxy and Stars sweep doubleheader Sunday

TACOMA, WA - The Tacoma Galaxy (1-0-0) and Stars (1-1-0) hosted the first of three doubleheaders at Bellarmine Memorial Stadium this season and both teams came away with big wins on Sunday.

In the Galaxy's season opener, the USL W League contest ended with Tacoma edging Bigfoot FC (0-1-0) by a 1-0 final in the lone Northwest Division match. Galaxy goalkeeper Amalia Chamberland recorded a shut out and the lone goal of the match came off the foot of Avery Nguyen, assisted by Malia Suehiro in the 59th minute.

The Galaxy outshot Bigfoot FC by a 23-9 margin in the match and it was the play of Bigfoot FC keeper Murphy Sheaff and her 10 saves that kept the score 1-0 at full time.

In the day's nightcap, West Seattle Junction FC (0-1-0) scored in the 5th minute when Joel Demian assisted on a Josias Schelb marker to give the visitors a short-lived lead.

Cale Spence used a Baseem Hosseini pass to tally the equalizer for Tacoma in the 10th minute and the match progressed to halftime with the teams level at 1-1.

The match stayed even until the 78th minute when Jacen Stein put West Seattle Junction FC back in front, 2-1.

With time running out, Fellipe Souza found the back of the net in the 89th minute for the Stars and the match was once again level, this time at 2-2.

The center referee added three minutes of time and it took that final minute to decide a winner. A West Seattle Junction yellow card led to a Stars penalty kick in the 90+3 minute and Yuta Toya buried it to give Tacoma the 3-2 win.

The Stars are back in action on Sunday, May 25 at Bellarmine against Midlakes United at 5 pm, while the Galaxy will be at Salmon Bay on May 30 before returning home to battle Lane United on Sunday, June 1 at 2 pm.
